Prescott, Arizona is one destination Phoenicians run off to during unbearably hot weather. Thanks to the high elevation, pine trees, and outdoor opportunities, Arizona’s former capital attracts those seeking an escape. I can’t think of a better way to enjoy my time in Prescott than kayaking Watson Lake!
This 70 acre reservoir is one of the most unique lakes within Arizona. Watson Lake is composed of many large granite boulders which extrude high above the shoreline and randomly within the open water.
Whether you want to kayak, paddle board, or pedal boat your way around the lake, this post will guide you through the details of where to begin and how to grab some watercraft rentals!
Where Is Watson Lake?
Watson Lake is situated northeast of downtown Prescott and is only a 10-15 minute drive.
On the north end you will find a dam that was built in the early 1900’s along Granite Creek, thus forming the reservoir. This is also where the boat ramp is located, so if you want to get out on the water, the North Boat Ramp is where you’ll want to drop in at!

- Fees | $3 parking fee. Cash or card at entry kiosk.
The lake also has:
- Campground
- Basketball court
- Disc golf course
- Hiking trails

- Fishing opportunities- get your permit here.
There is a little bit of everything for everyone here, and if you are looking to get out on the water you are in luck! There are also watercraft rentals available right inside the park.
Note!
There is no swimming in Watson Lake due to algae blooms that happen midsummer. Since the lake doesn’t have a good inlet or outlet this poses problems and could be harmful. When the algae isn’t blooming the water isn’t harmful, but swimming is still not allowed. Just keep this in mind if you plan on paddle boarding and putting your feet in the water!
There are rumors of mercury being in the water, but according to the locals it is not true. The swimming law is due to algae blooms. If there was mercury in the water they wouldn’t let us float on it!
Getting Your Rentals
Born To Be Wild Adventures is a local family owned watercraft rental business and is absolutely wonderful to work with! If you’re in need of rentals, definitely check them out. They offer:
- Kayaks
- Paddle Boards
- Canoes
- Pedal Boats
- Even E-bikes (for the road)!
We were hosted by Born to Be Wild Adventures during our visit and chose to pedal boat. I hadn’t pedal boated since I was a kid and honestly forgot how much fun it is!
All we had to do was arrive to the North Boat Ramp and hop in the boat! Born To Be Wild Adventures crew had it wiped down and in the water for us.
They even supply the life jackets. Don’t forget the law- each person must have a lifejacket while on the water.
Take a look at my Instagram reel below to peep my pedal boat adventure!
Best Time Of Year To Kayak Watson Lake
Despite what most think you can actually kayak Watson Lake year round! You’ll just have to bundle up and brave the cold winter temperatures if you go out in the cooler weather.
I’ve seen pictures of Watson Lake with a dusting of snow and it is absolutely gorgeous. I can’t imagine the view from out on the water!
Born To Be Wild Adventures graciously offers rentals during the cooler months and seasons, so while summer or fall may be the most comfortable temperature wise, you can enjoy kayaking Watson Lake during any time of the year.
Don’t Miss Moonlight Kayaking!
B2B Adventures also offers Moonlight kayaking on Watson Lake during select weekends between May and October.
This is such a fun and unique way to explore Watson Lake under the moonlight and stars!
Be sure to check out their Instagram for exact dates and more details. I hope to return this year and do this myself!
Watson Lake Kayaking
So, where do you go on the lake and what is there to see?
Whether you’re kayaking Watson Lake with your own watercrafts or rentals, you’ll most likely spend 2-3 hours out on the water. I found 2.5 hours to be the sweet spot, even with stopping to float and eat lunch on the pedal boat.
We followed B2B Adventure’s suggestion of heading straight across the lake from the boat ramp, continuing along the shoreline to explore the coves, then circling back to the boat ramp when done.
After exploring the lake myself, I’d say this is a great way of doing it!
My husband and I petaled across the lake to explore the coves. We were afraid to go in too far since we were in a pedal boat, but the kayaks were able to maneuver themselves through the shallow water and narrow passages much better.
Luckily Watson Lake isn’t too big of a lake, so you’ll be able to see a lot, if not the entire lake, in just a few hours.
You really can’t go wrong with exploring Watson Lake from the water. Just don’t forget to pack the necessities!
- Sunglasses
- Sunscreen
- Hat
- Water
- Snacks!
Local Tip!
If you’re from out of town like we are and need some fresh sandwiches for your packed lunch, check out Thumb Butte Pit Stop. They are a gas station, convenience store, and deli shop! They may seem like a hole in the wall but we really enjoyed their fresh daily sandwiches when we picked up ours!
I’d love to hear from you!
